It is important to use every character allowed by Google in your search results.  The max for visibility is now 152 characters for desktop and 120 for mobile searches. I often experiment with Yoast to find an optimal character length.  Being too long is always better than being too short, but remember if you are too long the description will look weird on Google searches because the words will get cut off.
